Thank you for the privilege of being considered as a speaker for your event. Naomi Rhode was the president of the National Speakers Association in 1993-94. Her theme was the "Privilege of the Platform." I still carry her message in my heart. Hiring a speaker for your audience is an important decision. Am I right for your event? Here in this FAQ format are some of the questions that may best help you assess our mutual fit.
What are your topics?
As the author of The On-Purpose Person and The On-Purpose Business my topics relate to personal leadership, business growth, strategy for life and business, sales, life coaching, performance improvement, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Every speech I give is customized by title and topic to the audience. I have consistent themes and patterns, but not canned speeches.
Are you a motivational speaker?
What is your definition of being a motivational speaker? Philosophically, I say, "No, I'm an inspirational speaker." I believe only you can motivate you. My job is to help you find that deep-seated desire by connecting your purpose with your performance. To inspire means to breathe in the spirit. That's why I categorized myself as an inspirational speaker.
Where are you located?
I'm located in the Orlando, Florida market, one of the largest convention and visitors areas in the world. So if you're planning an event in the Orlando area, please keep me in mind because you will save on travel and accommodation expenses.
What are your credentials?
Most obviously, I'm the author of two truly best-selling books. The On-Purpose Person has sold over 200,000 copies and The On-Purpose Business has sold over 30,000 copies. In addition, both books have multiple foreign translations. My MBA is from the Colgate Darden Graduate Business School at the University of Virginia. My undergraduate degree in Business and Economics is from Lehigh University. At age 9 I began my business career selling candy on the school bus. Four plus decades later, I'm still a businessman and entrepreneur. My career includes commercial real estate brokerage and development, consulting, and publishing.
OK, you're an author, business advisor, and MBA, but can you perform from the platform?
Fortunately, I've always been in leadership positions and in front of a crowd. Despite being an introvert/extrovert I'm comfortable on stage. I joined the National Speakers Association in 1993 at the urging of my friend, Glenna Salsbury, and have been a professional member since. The education and affiliation allows me to hone my craft.
How do you go above and beyond to help the meeting planner?
A sincere appreciation for the investment you are making to gather your people sets the foundation. As a businessman I understand the financial investment and what's on the line for your organization when holding an event. Your theme informs my work along with extensive research on your company plus interviews of select people.
If you've perused this site, you'll see that I produce On-Purpose Minutes for personal leadership and On-Purpose Business Minutes for business leadership. To help you promote your event, I can produce two to four "Minutes" in advance of your event to prepare and sell your audience on being in attendance. Additional "Minutes" can be produced as follow-up to reinforce the theme of your event and my message. I show up at the event to work by investing myself in your event and people.
Every engagement is tailored to the audience, company, and industry at hand. Not one to “show and go,” I consider it a privilege to meet and greet your participants, to sign books, and to answer their questions face-to-face if that is appropriate for your event. Let's figure out how I can add value to your event from the stage and beyond.
Finally, as a professional speaker, I've learned that you have lots more to do for your meeting than worrying about pampering a speaker. I take care of myself getting to your venue and am generally low maintenance.
On-Purpose seems to be spiritual message. Is it appropriate for the workplace?
Employee and customer engagement is ultimately a matter of making a heart connection. The spirit of a person cannot be denied and I respectfully go there head first. Any organization that seeks to strengthen employee, customer, and shareholder ties inevitably deals with the spirit of the person. The On-Purpose message addresses the spirit of the person while honoring the diversity of spiritual perspectives and faiths.
What audiences most appreciate the On-Purpose message?
Place me in front of people who have responsibilities and decisions to make affecting the lives of their clients, customers, employees, team mates, and themselves. If their financial reward is tied to their personal performance, then all the better. This includes CEOs, presidents, c-suite executives, small business owners, sales persons, financial advisors, insurance agents, and other trusted advisors. The On-Purpose message is ideal for Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development Agencies with business membership. Associations that target business people are also a great fit. Niche markets are Christian business organizations and churches. One cannot meaningfully engage in the topic of purpose and performance without touching on the spiritual dimension.
In terms of full disclosure, this work is based on Christian principles. In settings where the Christian faith is appropriate to the audience, I am very comfortable whether in the pulpit or on the platform, but I know better than to mix the two.
Do you speak any other languages?
No. Having married a girl from South Carolina, I am fluent in understanding most US Southern dialects. Growing up in the Pittsburgh, PA suburbs, I can communicate in Pittsburghese, yo'uns guiys. Yes, I remain a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Do you do keynote speeches and workshops?
Yes, I do both and then some. I have full-day programs and even three-day programs. From your perspective know that I can expand or contract the length of any program to fit your schedule - even at the last minute.
What is your platform style?
"Authentic, inspiring, intelligent, good humored, and engaging" are the qualities most often attributed to me by my peers, clients, and audiences. As an optimistic person, I have a comfortable, easy delivery that mixes light and spontaneous humor with a life-changing message and stories that are designed to be uplifting and honoring. Nothing is canned, however, the content is consistently about being on-purpose.
Can I see you speaking?
Watch some of the On-Purpose Minutes on this blog. Each is outlined and ad-libbed so they're close to what you get on the platform. Most are single takes in my office "studio".
Stage performances, however, demand a higher energy level than close-up video. That said, the Minutes are representative of my style. Below is a ten-minute excerpt from a keynote address I gave to 850 health coaches at a national convention in Orlando. The "dot in the middle" being referenced is part of the client's corporate identity and is hanging in the background.
What are your fees?
Fees are based upon travel from Orlando, FL and increase with distance traveled, program length, and audience. Expenses are additional. Generally, my fees start in the mid-four figures and escalate into the low five figures. Please contact my office at info@on-purpose.com or call 407.657.6000 so we can do a work-up on your specific needs.
